The Positive Side of Change

“The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.”

It’s wild to think that change is the most common thing all humans face in this life. Regardless of race, status, or privilege, whether voluntary or involuntary, whether big or small, change is happening to everyone, everywhere, all the time.

Change is in every decision and action, in growing and shifting, in making plans and meeting new people. Change is in every cell in your bodies, every thought in your minds, but also in the natural world all around you. Every rotation of the sun brings with it change, and with change comes possibility.

Some changes are small and easy to adapt to, like changing your hair, trying new foods, or rearranging the furniture in the living room. And other changes can be hard and disorienting, like the loss of a loved one, a new job, or a move across the country.

Change forces us out of our comfort zone.

If change is inevitable, then you can either choose to fight it or embrace it, but you cannot escape it. But what does it mean to embrace change, especially when change feels threatening? It means learning to see change as a good thing; to become flexible, quick to adapt and willing to let go of people, places, and things, so that you can climb the proverbial ladder. It means trusting yourself to find a way through the twists and turns and emerge stronger, more capable.

Change often brings with it a level of instability and uncertainty. Most people have a great deal of anxiety when facing the unknown, but the truth is, when it feels the most terrifying is exactly when growth and opportunity are near. Right in the middle of that fear and uncertainty is when you should act.

And what happens when you resist change? As the world and circumstances around you change, opportunities pass you by and you will remain exactly as you are–stuck. People who don’t adapt when things change in their life or those who hesitate to make decisions are the ones who can never seem to get ahead, no matter how hard they try. In business or career, in relationships or finances, the most successful are those who can evaluate and adapt quickly to change.

Intentionally creating change.

To succeed and achieve your goals and dreams, you must become comfortable changing and growing. If you desire to succeed in any area of your life, you must learn to not only embrace change, but also seek opportunity to create it – knowing that it will produce the kind of growth and expanded perspective you seek.

Humans are creatures of habit and often repeat things for the sake of ease and comfort. We don’t easily realize how significant each small task or routine is; however, one small variation has the potential to change the trajectory of our future.

When you engage in a new activity or experience, your brain activity increases as new connections are formed. These new connections improve overall brain function, not limited to that specific new activity. In other words, adding one new variation to your daily routine can positively impact all areas of your life.

Change brings opportunities.

As consistent as the waves crashing along the shoreline, washing away what has been and leaving behind treasures and life-giving nutrients; change also abs and flows in our lives. And if we allow it, change has the power to wash away things of the past, people, and circumstances we’ve outgrown and leave behind new possibilities.
